Does Where We Live Make Us Fat?

Can better community design keep us healthier? The Knox County Health Department has announced a special pre-conference lecture by Dr. Lawrence Frank on community design and personal health.

Dr. Frank, of the University of British Columbia, will present an eye-opening lecture titled “Obesity, Health and the Built Environment” at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at the Knox County Health Department Auditorium.

He will discuss how the design of our communities can shape our bodies and ultimately impact our region's health.

Admission is free. The auditorium is located at 140 Dameron Avenue, Knoxville.

Dr. Frank is a leading authority on community design and public health. He holds the J. Armand Bombardier Chair in Sustainable Transportation Systems at the Centre for Human Settlements, School of Community and Regional Planning and the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability, University of British Columbia, Vancouver.


Dr. Frank and his work were featured prominently in the cover story of the January 20, 2007 issue of Science News magazine.


On March 30, Dr. Frank will participate in the panel discussion on Community, Environment, and Health of the Plain Talk on Quality Growth conference at the Knoxville Convention Center.
